Ghana Targets June 2027 to Complete GDP and CPI Rebasing
Government has set June 2027 as the target deadline for completing the rebasing of Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Consumer Price Index (CPI) as part of efforts to improve the reliability and accuracy of the country’s economic data.
Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem disclosed that the Ministry of Finance is working closely with the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) to ensure that both exercises are completed within the proposed timeframe.
He made the announcement in Accra during the launch of the maiden edition of Ghana in Numbers 2025, where he stressed the importance of dependable statistical information in shaping national economic policies and development strategies.
Mr Ampem explained that updated economic statistics were necessary for effective fiscal planning, budget preparation, resource distribution and investment decisions.
He urged the Ghana Statistical Service to maintain the pace of work and ensure that all activities connected to the rebasing process are concluded by the end of the second quarter of 2027.
The Deputy Minister also revealed that the Finance Ministry intends to collaborate with the statistical agency to establish more reliable domestic funding arrangements for its major programmes.
According to him, the initiative is aimed at reducing dependence on external financing and strengthening Ghana’s ability to independently fund critical statistical operations.
He added that the government would also promote better coordination among public institutions and encourage the adoption of consistent standards in collecting and managing national data.
On legislative reforms, Mr Ampem assured the Ghana Statistical Service of the Ministry’s commitment to the proposed Statistics Bill.
He indicated that the Ministry would give the legislation the necessary attention once it is formally presented and work towards securing its passage through Parliament.
The proposed reforms are expected to strengthen the country’s statistical system and improve the quality of information available to policymakers, businesses, investors and the general public.
