Ghana Has Adequate Electricity Supply Following Energy Sector Reforms – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that the country currently has a stable electricity supply, insisting that power shortages, commonly referred to as dumsor, are no longer being experienced.

He attributed the improvement in electricity supply to measures introduced by his administration to address the financial challenges that had affected the energy sector, particularly outstanding debts owed to power producers.

Speaking during an engagement with members of the Ghanaian community in Moscow, Russia, the President said the country now had sufficient electricity to meet the needs of consumers.

Mr Mahama disclosed that his government had settled outstanding obligations to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and established a payment arrangement to ensure that companies supplying electricity receive payments promptly.

According to the President, his administration inherited approximately US$1.7 billion in unpaid debts owed to IPPs when it assumed office. There were also outstanding financial obligations relating to natural gas supplied from the Jubilee Field and by Italian energy company ENI.

He explained that the accumulation of these debts had created difficulties in the energy sector, with some independent power producers previously threatening to suspend electricity generation over delayed payments.

The President said clearing the outstanding IPP debts had helped restore confidence among electricity suppliers and improved the government’s relationship with operators in the sector.

He further indicated that the government had put in place a structured payment arrangement to address other outstanding obligations. Under the arrangement, initial payments are made, with subsequent amounts settled when they become due.

Mr Mahama expressed satisfaction with the progress made, noting that power producers had responded positively to the new payment system.

He maintained that the government’s interventions had strengthened the financial management of the energy sector and helped secure a more reliable electricity supply.

The President reiterated that Ghana currently had adequate power to meet national demand, expressing confidence in the measures being implemented to maintain stability in the sector.
