Your Take: Should LT-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi Become The Next National Head OF The Hawks?

SOUTH AFRICA — A debate is emerging over whether Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi should become the next National Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks.

The question has sparked public discussion about leadership, accountability and the future of South Africa’s fight against organised crime and corruption.

Mkhwanazi, the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner, has attracted national attention through his public statements about alleged criminal networks and corruption within law enforcement. His position has also placed the issue of police accountability firmly in the public spotlight.

Supporters of his possible appointment may argue that his experience in policing and his willingness to confront allegations of criminal infiltration could strengthen the Hawks’ ability to investigate serious crimes.

However, appointing a national crime-fighting chief requires more than public popularity. The successful candidate must demonstrate professional competence, independence, integrity and the ability to lead complex investigations without political interference.

The Hawks play a critical role in investigating serious organised crime, corruption, serious commercial crime and other priority offences. Their effectiveness depends on credible leadership, adequate resources and the ability to investigate allegations impartially, regardless of who may be implicated.

If Mkhwanazi were appointed, the key question would be whether his leadership could translate public expectations into measurable results, including successful prosecutions, stronger investigations and improved public confidence in law enforcement.

Ultimately, any appointment should follow a transparent and lawful process based on merit, experience and the needs of the institution.

Would his appointment strengthen South Africa’s fight against organised crime and corruption, or should another candidate be considered?
