Bayern Munich Reacts to Ruto’s Announcement of Ajax Clash in Kenya

German football giants Bayern Munich have confirmed they will travel to Nairobi on January 5, 2027, to face Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam in a friendly match marking the opening of the new Raila Odinga International Stadium at Talanta Sports City.

The confirmation followed President William Ruto’s announcement on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, that the two European clubs would headline the inauguration of the 60,000-seat facility in Nairobi.

According to a report published by TUKO.co.ke on Wednesday, Bayern Munich responded through its official Facebook page, describing the fixture as “a special match to kick off the new year.” The announcement attracted attention from Kenyan football fans anticipating the opportunity to watch the two clubs play on local soil.

Bayern’s official announcement confirmed that the German club would face Ajax in Nairobi as part of the stadium’s ceremonial opening. The fixture is scheduled to take place during the European football season’s winter break.

The club also indicated that the event would help strengthen its relationship with supporters across Africa and promote the Bundesliga internationally.

Bayern board member for marketing and sales Rouven Kasper said the club had millions of supporters across the continent and viewed the visit as an opportunity to connect with them directly.

Ajax separately confirmed its participation, saying it was proud to feature in the opening match at the new stadium.

Ruto said the fixture would bring together two of Europe’s most successful clubs for a major sporting event in Kenya. The President also linked the match to the country’s preparations to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

The new stadium, formerly known as Talanta Stadium, has a planned capacity of 60,000 spectators and is expected to play a significant role in Kenya’s preparations for the continental tournament.

The match is expected to draw attention to Kenya’s sporting infrastructure and provide local fans with an opportunity to watch established European teams compete in Nairobi.

However, the clubs’ announcements do not establish which individual players will travel to Kenya, and supporters should await further official information about the squads, ticket prices and purchasing arrangements.

The January 5 fixture will mark a major milestone for the new stadium as Kenya prepares to host international football events.
