Suliman Carrim Granted Bail
A major step forward in the judicial procedures against North West billionaire Suliman Carrim has been his release on bond in a case involving his purported non-appearance before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
On Wednesday, 28 October 2026, the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court granted bail to Carrim after hearing arguments from both the state and his defence team over his continued incarceration throughout the course of the case.
Arrested at OR Tambo International Airport earlier last month, Carrim was only days away from his scheduled international departure. He is accused of not appearing before the commission as requested in a subpoena and is therefore facing charges under the Commissions Act.
The State fought against his release, claiming that he may try to avoid trial by going abroad. The prosecution argued that his prior actions about the commission cast doubt on his ability to reappear in court upon his release.
On the other hand, Carrim denied that he had any plans to leave South Africa. His lawyers said that he had a confirmed residence, national commercial interests, and proof of a return ticket for his intended trip.
In addition, the defence argued that if bail restrictions were reasonable, he would be required to be in court for all subsequent hearings.
Due to Carrim’s involvement in the broader issue surrounding the Madlanga Commission, the case has garnered significant public attention, and the magistrate’s judgement marks a development in that regard.
Crime, corruption, and potential meddling with the judicial system are among topics that the panel is looking at. Alleged transactions involving persons involved in the investigation have come to light as a result of Carrim’s testimony.
His release on bond, however, does not constitute an acquittal or dismissal of the charges. He is still required to follow the court’s orders and be subject to the criminal justice system.
At the same time, Carrim is embroiled in a separate court dispute in Musina on claims of attempted car theft, fraud, and the use of forged papers. His request for bail in that case has been rescheduled until October 30th.
His release from detention is not guarantyd by the recent verdict as long as he is still being held for the separate case.
What comes next in the criminal proceedings against him and the terms of his bail will be the focus of the ongoing hearings.
