Steve Sekano Reveals Why He Left Moroka Swallows’ Steering Committee

Steve Sekano, a legendary figure at Moroka Swallows, has revealed why he decided to leave the club’s Supporters and Shareholders Steering Committee, pointing to concerns about the group’s financial position and its ability to fulfil its mission of bringing the club back.

Sekano’s revelation comes as discussions continue over the revival of Moroka Swallows, popularly known as the Dube Birds, following businessman Walter Mokoena’s announcement of plans to re-establish the historic South African football club.

According to a report published by NN24 on Thursday, October 29, 2026, Sekano explained that the committee had only R10,000 available, raising questions about its resources and capacity to achieve its objectives.

The former Swallows star had been associated with the committee, which was established through the ‘Bring Back The Birds’ initiative. The group had spent nearly two years trying to mobilise supporters, attract investment and explore ways to restore the club.

However, uncertainty has emerged over the committee’s role in the latest revival plans, particularly after Mokoena announced the formation of Moroka Swallows SC without the committee being involved in the process.

The announcement reportedly caught several supporters and people connected to the club by surprise. Committee members have expressed disappointment that they were not consulted before the plans became public, considering the time and effort they had invested in the revival campaign.

The committee has since sought clarification from Mokoena regarding its position in the new project and whether supporters and shareholders would have a role in the club’s future.

Mokoena, however, has reportedly questioned the committee’s authority, maintaining that he was not introduced to the group and that its original task of bringing Moroka Swallows back had not been achieved.

Sekano previously explained that Mokoena had approached former Swallows players, including himself, Ace Mnini and Andries Mpondo, inviting them to participate in the new initiative because of their connection to the club.
