State Unveiled a Strategic Partnership with Safaricom to Power Real-Time Weather Tracking
The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry has unveiled a strategic partnership with Safaricom to leverage the telecommunications provider’s expansive digital network for real-time weather monitoring.
Announcing the initiative on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, Environment Principal Secretary Festus Ng’eno confirmed that integrating Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and mobile network infrastructure will accelerate the modernization of the Kenya Meteorological Service Authority (KMSA).
The cross-sector partnership aims to expand KMSA’s physical observation network across Kenya’s 47 counties by deploying automated weather sensors and data transmission hubs on cellular infrastructure.
High-level consultative sessions involving KMSA leadership, Safaricom technology executives, and private data partners focused on deploying localized sensors to feed continuous atmospheric data directly into central predictive models, significantly improving forecasting precision.
Government authorities emphasized that modernizing climate data infrastructure is critical as the nation faces heightened climate variability, agricultural disruptions, and flash flood risks.
By transmitting real-time localized weather data directly to smallholder farmers, disaster management teams, and pastoralist communities, the ministry seeks to transition KMSA from static daily bulletins to a dynamic early warning ecosystem capable of protecting life and property.
The technology-driven initiative reflects a broader administrative push to harness private sector technical capacity for public infrastructure resilience ahead of the 2027 General Election.
As state agencies prioritize climate-smart investments and digital transformation, the Safaricom-KMSA partnership establishes a crucial benchmark for environmental governance, public safety, and national climate adaptation standards.
