The qualified nations are Nigeria, China, Brazil, Venezuela, North Korea and Ghana, following their performances in the Round of 16. Nigeria’s Flamingos booked their place in the last eight with a 2-1 victory over Mexico on Thursday. Oluebube Umejiaku opened the scoring five minutes before half-time with a finish from inside the penalty area, registering her third goal of the competition. The Flamingos maintained their attacking pressure after the break, and Mary Dunstan doubled their advantage in the 71st minute with a powerful strike.
Mexico attempted to fight back and reduced the deficit through Emily Delgado deep into stoppage time. However, Nigeria held on to secure the victory and confirm their progression to the quarter-finals.
China also advanced on Thursday after overcoming France in a penalty shoot-out. The encounter ended goalless after regulation time, leaving the two teams to battle for qualification from the spot.
