Mozambican National Sentenced To 10 Years for Smuggling a Military Bomb Into South Africa

After admitting to bringing a 60mm mortar bomb into South Africa at the Lebombo Port of Entry in Mpumalanga, a 26-year-old man from Mozambique, Antonio Charles Mugabe, was given a ten-year straight jail term by the Boschfontein Regional Court.

The event that led to the conviction occurred on August 23, 2026, when border authorities from the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and the South African Police Service (SAPS) scanned passengers’ bags and performed standard physical inspections as they crossed the border from Mozambique into Komatipoort. An rapid physical search revealed the live military explosive device and led to Mugabe’s prompt arrest at the checkpoint when border control agents highlighted a high-density, suspicious item stashed within his personal baggage.

The investigation was transferred to the Nelspruit-based Serious Organised Crime Unit of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) after the arrest. Mugabe formally pleaded guilty to three separate statutory charges: unlawful possession of an explosive device, illegal transportation of an explosive, and illegal importation of explosives into the Republic of South Africa. The case was transferred from the local Komatipoort Magistrates’ Court to the Boschfontein Regional Court by the investigating officers.

Major General Nico Gerber, head of the Mpumalanga Hawks provincial unit, welcomed the ten-year prison term and praised the operational alertness of the combined SAPS and SARS team stationed at the Lebombo post. Public safety and national security were spared from a possibly disastrous danger when a high-yield military device was intercepted before it could reach South African soil, according to Gerber. The successful conviction, he said, shows that the Hawks are still dedicated to their goals of stopping transnational criminal syndicates, protecting borders, and stopping the illicit trade of military hardware at regional ports of entry.
