MK Party Member Quits After Duduzane Zuma’s Remarks on Foreigners
Mabongi Mthembu, a member of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP), has announced that she is leaving the party and has joined ActionSA. She says her decision is linked to her concerns about illegal immigration, jobs, crime and the future of South Africa.
Her move follows recent remarks on illegal immigration by Duduzane Zuma, the son of former president and MK Party leader Jacob Zuma. Mthembu says the speech made her stop and think about her place in the party, and whether it still reflected her values and what she expects from a political organisation.
She shared her decision in a statement on her Facebook page on Sunday. She said it came after careful thought about the problems facing ordinary South Africans, and that she wanted to be part of a party that takes those concerns seriously.
“As a South African, I want a party that takes seriously the concerns that people are raising about illegal immigration, jobs, crime and the future of our country,” Mthembu said.
She admitted that leaving the MK Party was not easy. She apologised to MKP supporters but made it clear that her mind was made up. “With a heavy heart, I apologise to MKP supporters, but I have decided that MKP is no longer my political choice,” she said.
Mthembu confirmed that she has officially joined ActionSA, which is led by Herman Mashaba. She said the party’s priorities match her own values. She also stressed that her loyalty is not to any party but to the country. “My loyalty is to South Africa and its people,” she stated. She added that she wants her political choices, and her eventual vote, to reflect what she believes ordinary citizens are worried about.
Her announcement has brought fresh attention to the debate on illegal immigration, and to how political parties respond to public concerns about border control, job opportunities, crime and national security. ActionSA has consistently listed immigration enforcement among its main priorities, while the MK Party continues to take part in the wider national debate on governance and other issues.
Duduzane Zuma’s remarks are a central part of how Mthembu explains her decision. However, her announcement on its own does not show that other MK Party members plan to leave. It is still unclear whether other supporters will follow her example.
For now, Mthembu’s position is clear. She has ended her ties with the MK Party and chosen ActionSA, saying the move reflects her commitment to South Africa and the issues she believes matter most to its people.
