Meet the US Couple Who Left a KSh130M Business for Nairobi

A Black American couple has captured the attention of social media after opening up about their dramatic relocation from Virginia to Nairobi, Kenya.

Veronica and Okino Oakley made the bold decision to leave behind a thriving enterprise in the United States that was generating nearly $1 million annually, equivalent to approximately KSh 129 million.

The couple spent three full years conducting extensive research on various global destinations before choosing to settle permanently in the Kenyan capital.

Their primary motivation for moving across the world was not a lack of career opportunities, but a deep desire to raise their children in a safe community where they felt truly valued.

However, their massive leap of faith was immediately met with a devastating financial blow just months after their arrival in East Africa.

After leaving the day-to-day operations of their lucrative US business in the hands of others, management issues caused the entire company to collapse within a mere five months.

The Oakleys described the sudden loss of their KSh 130 million revenue stream as one of the most painful milestones of their entire entrepreneurial journey.

Despite the staggering financial heartbreak, the resilient couple firmly stated that they do not regret their massive relocation to Kenya.

Instead of moving back to America to salvage what was left, they doubled down on their long-term plans in Nairobi.

The family currently resides in a luxurious, fully furnished three-bedroom home in Nairobi costing approximately $1,800 per month, which is around KSh 230,000.

Their modern residential compound features high-end amenities including a swimming pool, private gym, sauna, and an in-house movie theater.

According to the couple, acquiring a home with similar premium luxury facilities in the United States would have cost them a significantly higher amount of money.

They also revealed that they have adjusted incredibly well to the cultural shift, finding the overall pace of life in Nairobi to be highly refreshing and collaborative.

Since launching their fresh start, the duo has already established roughly five new businesses spanning artificial intelligence, media production, marketing, and technology.

They are actively working alongside over ten local small businesses while interviewing dozens of Kenyan professionals to expand their new corporate teams.

The Oakleys maintain that Nairobi has offered them an invaluable sense of balance, purpose, and peace of mind that money simply could not buy back in the West
