Gachagua Sounds Alarm as He Sends Bold Message to Ruto Over Kenyans Trapped in Russia-Ukraine War

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has challenged President William Ruto to account for Kenyans caught up in the Russia-Ukraine war, demanding that the Head of State secure their return following his visit to Moscow.

Speaking during a public rally in Kajiado County on Thursday, October 29, 2026, Gachagua questioned the fate of Kenyans who travelled to Russia after reportedly being promised employment opportunities but allegedly ended up serving in the Russian military and fighting in Ukraine.

The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader directed his remarks at Ruto, using the President’s Moscow visit to renew calls for government intervention over Kenyans believed to be trapped in the conflict.

“Mimi nataka nimwambie Kasongo, wewe umeenda pale Russia, pale Moscow uko hapo, tunataka kukuambia wale watoto wetu ulipeleka huko wakapelekwa jeshi, ukirudi nyumbani ukuje na watoto wetu,” Gachagua said.

Translated, Gachagua urged Ruto to bring home the young Kenyans he claimed had been taken into military service when he returned from Russia.

The former Deputy President also raised concerns about Kenyans reportedly being held as prisoners of war in Ukraine, asking the President to explain what had happened to those who travelled abroad.

“Kasongo tunataka kukuambia wale watoto ulipeleka wakakuwa prisoners of war, huko Ukraine tunataka utujibu ulipeleka watoto wetu wapi,” he added.

His remarks placed the plight of Kenyans caught up in the foreign conflict at the centre of his political address, with the DCP leader demanding answers from the government over their whereabouts and circumstances.

The concerns involve reports of Kenyans who allegedly travelled to Russia expecting civilian employment before finding themselves linked to military operations.

Such cases have raised questions about recruitment practices, the safety of citizens seeking work abroad and the government’s responsibility to assist those facing danger in foreign countries.

Gachagua’s appeal also comes amid heightened public interest in Ruto’s engagement with Russian authorities and whether diplomatic discussions can help establish the circumstances surrounding affected Kenyans.

However, the claims made during the rally would require official clarification regarding the number of Kenyans involved, their current locations and the steps being taken to secure their release or repatriation.

The former Deputy President maintained that the government should prioritise bringing affected Kenyans home, turning the issue into a direct demand for answers from the President over the fate of citizens caught in the war.
