Nigeria’s Flamingos have advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after securing a 2-1 victory over Mexico in their Round of 16 clash on Thursday.

Oluebube Umejiaku opened the scoring in the 40th minute to give Nigeria the lead before the break, rewarding the Flamingos’ efforts in the first half.

The Nigerian side maintained their advantage after the restart and doubled their lead in the 72nd minute through Mary Akpan Dunstan, putting Hakeem Busari’s team in a strong position to seal qualification.

Mexico mounted a late challenge when Emily Delgado scored in the 10th minute of stoppage time, but the Flamingos held on to secure victory and book their place in the last eight.

The win extends Nigeria’s impressive run in the competition after they defeated defending champions North Korea 3-1 in their final group-stage match to progress to the knockout phase.

The Flamingos will now face Venezuela in the quarter-finals on Sunday, November 1, as they continue their pursuit of the tournament title.
