Banking stocks diverge as NGX rally leaves major lenders behind
•Access Holdings,Wema Bank gain while Fidelity Bank, GTCO and UBA decline Nigeria’s banking stocks delivered mixed performances on Tuesday, October 27, as gains in selected lenders were offset by losses in other major financial institutions, leaving the sector’s benchmark index virtually unchanged despite a broader rally on the Nigerian Exchange.
Wema Bank rose 4.01 per cent to close at ₦31.10 per share, while Access Holdings gained 3.26 per cent to ₦28.50. The advances were counterbalanced by declines in Fidelity Bank, Guaranty Trust Holding Company and United Bank for Africa, reflecting divergent trading patterns among some of the market’s prominent banking stocks. Fidelity Bank fell 4.35 per cent to ₦22 per share, GTCO declined 1.52 per cent to ₦123.20, while UBA shed 1.35 per cent to close at ₦40.25. The NGX Banking Index ended at 2,574.61 points, compared with 2,574.45 points in the preceding session, a marginal movement that contrasted with the broader market’s 1.07 per cent advance. The performance suggests that the latest market rally was not accompanied by uniform buying interest across the banking sector. Investors were willing to increase their exposure to selected lenders while selling pressure persisted in others. However, the available trading figures do not establish whether the differences were driven by company-specific developments, profit-taking, valuation considerations or short-term trading strategies. For the banking sector, share-price movements must also be assessed against financial performance, asset quality, capital adequacy, deposit mobilisation and the ability to generate sustainable earnings. These considerations are particularly relevant when comparing banks operating under different business models and facing different funding and credit risks. The mixed session also illustrates why investors should distinguish between the performance of the overall stock market and that of individual sectors. Although the All-Share Index reached 253,990.06 points, the banking index’s near-flat performance showed that the market’s gains were concentrated elsewhere. Whether banking stocks subsequently participate more strongly in the rally will depend on trading sentiment and the information investors receive about the financial performance and prospects of individual lenders. For now, Tuesday’s session points to a market in which investors are differentiating between banking stocks rather than buying the sector as a whole.
