But after they were spotted wearing African National Congress (ANC) regalia, some fans didn’t take it as a joke. Instead of laughing, they mocked them.

Siphiwe and his brother, Simphiwe Vilakazi (37), from Chesterville in Durban, have vowed not to let the bullying get to them.

They said they would not comment on wearing the ANC T-shirts, but they wouldn’t tolerate bullying.

Twins speak out against political bullying

As far as we know, South Africa is a democratic country. Everyone who lives in it has the right to do anything as long as they don’t violate other people’s rights. So, we are allowed to exercise our rights as long as no one gets hurt.

“We noticed that we were called names on social media. It’s sad that even after 1994, people are still discriminating against each other because of politics. We have bigger issues to fight for or against instead of wasting our time dragging each other,” said Simphiwe.

Known as Amawele AseChesterville, the twins have shared the stage with top comedians such as Celeste Ntuli, Simphiwe Shembe, and Skhumba Hlophe.

Amawele AseChesterville recall childhood bullying

Simphiwe said that while they were growing up, they were bullied because they were poor.

“We were very poor growing up. We used to move from one place to another because we didn’t have our own place. My mother used to rent a room until a church took us in. But we were kicked out after some time, and an old lady took us in until we got an RDP house.

Other kids used to make jokes about our situation. They used to laugh at us. We managed to overcome all the bullying, and we can’t allow the bullying to get to us just because of the ANC T-shirts. No, we are bigger than that.

Simphiwe said they were older now and had managed to build a house for their mum.

He also said they even make jokes about bullying and were surprised that some people found it easy to bully others on social media without being provoked.

“Our local government elections are around the corner. We should be preaching peaceful elections instead of spending our time doing nothing but bullying.

“How can you say that a person is insane just because you saw them supporting a political party that you hate? Some people must grow up,” added Simphiwe.
