The Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has threatened to deal with those who rig elections in Nigeria, saying his administration would ensure electoral offenders face jail terms if he wins the 2027 presidential election.

Obi spoke on Wednesday at an NDC town hall meeting in Nasarawa State, where he addressed party supporters on electoral integrity and the need to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system.

Responding to a question about election rigging, the former Anambra State governor said the party would not allow electoral manipulation to go unchallenged in the next general election.

“You didn’t ask about what we are going to do if people rig the election next year. Let me assure you, number one, this coming election, we will rig those who rig it.

Primate Elijah Ayodele, leader of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, has issued a warning to President Bola Tinubu urging him to prioritize his health over political ambitions for a second term. In a statement released through his media aide, Osho Oluwatosin, Ayodele stated that the president’s health is deteriorating and requires immediate attention to avoid serious consequences. He emphasized the need for both medical intervention and divine prayers to address an impending health crisis.

According to Ayodele, Tinubu is in a “red zone” health-wise, even if he is not fully aware of the danger or has not been properly informed. The cleric stressed that the president’s well-being is vital not only for his family but also for the nation, and that politics should not come at the expense of health. He further predicted that even if Tinubu secures a second term, he may be unable to complete it due to these health challenges.

Global commodity prices are projected to rise by 23 per cent in 2026 as the conflict in the Middle East disrupts oil supplies, while shipping disruptions and weather risks threaten food production, the World Bank has said.

In its latest Commodity Markets Outlook, released on Wednesday, the World Bank said energy prices were expected to increase by 32 per cent this year, reversing three consecutive years of declines, before moderating in 2027.

“Food commodity prices are expected to rise about 10 per cent in 2026 and another 7 per cent in 2027, a cumulative increase of 18 per cent, as conflict disrupts grain shipments, El Niño threatens harvests, and high fuel and fertilizer prices increase agricultural costs. Overall commodity prices are forecast to rise 23 per cent this year before declining by 7 per cent in 2027,” the lender said in the report.

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has promised to declare a state of emergency in security, education and electricity if elected president in 2027.

Obi made the pledge on Wednesday during a town hall meeting with supporters and grassroots stakeholders in Kwanga, Nasarawa State, where he outlined his plans to improve security, expand access to education and boost electricity generation.

The former Anambra State governor promised to deliver 10,000 megawatts of electricity within four years of an NDC administration, describing reliable power supply as critical to industrialisation and job creation.

He criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu, alleging that the president had spent more than 260 days abroad since assuming office while Nigerians grappled with economic hardship and insecurity.
