Suliman Carrim Ordered to Contact Madlanga Commission Within 48 Hours After Bail
North West businessman Suliman Carrim has been ordered to have his legal representative contact the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry within 48 hours of his release from custody. The instruction came from the Pretoria Magistratesā Court on Wednesday after he was granted bail of R100 000.
Carrim faces a charge of contravening the Commissions Act 8 of 1947. The charge relates to his failure to appear before the commission as required. He had already given evidence before the inquiry on 9 and 10 March 2026. He later missed further scheduled appearances and cited medical reasons for his absence.
Police arrested Carrim at OR Tambo International Airport on 15 October. At the time, he was about to board an international flight. Magistrate Marc Curlewis granted bail on strict conditions. Carrim must surrender his passport. He must report to a police station every Monday. He must also attend all court proceedings linked to the matter. He may not leave South Africa without the courtās permission.
The magistrate warned that any breach of these conditions could lead to a warrant of arrest and further detention. The case has been postponed to 8 December 2026. On that date, the state is expected to disclose the docket.
Although bail has been granted in the Pretoria matter, Carrim remains in custody. He faces separate proceedings in the Musina Magistratesā Court. Those charges relate to alleged attempted vehicle theft and related offences. The two matters are being handled independently.
The courtās decision means Carrim must still engage with the Madlanga Commission once he is released from the Pretoria custody linked to the commission charge. His legal team has 48 hours from the moment of release to make the necessary arrangements for his next appearance before the inquiry. The bail conditions remain in force until the court decides otherwise. The outcome of the Musina case will determine when Carrim can fully leave custody.
