SSNIT Reveals Ghana’s Highest-Paid Pensioner Earns ₵213,000 Monthly

Ghana’s Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has disclosed that the country’s highest-paid pensioner is expected to receive approximately GH¢213,991.47 monthly in 2026, highlighting the significant differences in pension payments among beneficiaries of the scheme.

The disclosure comes as SSNIT continues to implement adjustments to monthly pension payments following its annual pension indexation exercise. The adjustment is intended to help pensioners maintain their purchasing power while ensuring the long-term sustainability of the pension scheme.

According to reports on the 2026 pension adjustment, the highest-earning pensioner previously received GH¢201,792.37 per month as of December 31, 2025. Following the new adjustment, the monthly payment is expected to rise to GH¢213,991.47.

SSNIT announced an overall pension increase of 10 per cent for 2026. The adjustment comprises a fixed increase of six per cent and a redistributed amount of GH¢91.56, designed to provide additional support to pensioners receiving lower monthly payments.

The redistribution mechanism means that pension increases are not identical for all beneficiaries. While higher-paid pensioners receive increases closer to the general indexation rate, those on lower pensions benefit from proportionally larger adjustments.

The Trust also increased the minimum pension for new retirees from GH¢300 to GH¢400 per month. Existing pensioners who previously received the minimum payment of GH¢300 are expected to receive GH¢409.56 following the adjustment.

The changes come amid continuing discussions about retirement security, the cost of living and the ability of pension payments to meet the needs of older people in Ghana.

SSNIT has explained that pension indexation considers factors including salary growth among active contributors, inflation and the long-term financial sustainability of the fund. The annual adjustment is carried out in consultation with the National Pensions Regulatory Authority under the relevant provisions of Ghana’s pension law.

The latest figures have also drawn attention to the wide gap between the highest and lowest pension payments under the scheme. While some retirees receive substantial monthly benefits based on their contribution and pension arrangements, many others depend on significantly smaller payments.

The figures therefore highlight the importance of understanding how pension benefits are calculated and how the redistribution mechanism affects retirees across different income levels.
