Here’s how beneficiaries can protect against the latest SASSA grant scams being perpetrated by syndicates and insiders …
0 SASSA grant scams are getting more sophisticated, but they ultimately still follow the same playbook. Image: AI generated, for illustrative purposes only When you see any of the latest SASSA grant scams, do you wonder who benefits from them exactly? Never mind the question of who would be so low as to target the poorest quotient of the country’s population. Moreover, in over 20 years of social grants, no single organisation or organised syndicate has been publicly identified as being behind these numerous SASSA grant scams.
Nevertheless, back in February 2026, an SAPS-led operation arrested government employees linked to an alleged fraud syndicate worth R4.9 million. Then again, in July 2026, officials at a SASSA office in Sekhukhune were dismissed after an internal audit found a syndicate manipulating databases in a R33-million fraud.
Another perpetrator of SASSA grant scams are bogus third-party financial institutions. South African Social Security Agency CEO Themba Matlou has warned vulnerable beneficiaries they shouldn’t sign up for any products that show as unauthorised debit orders. And thirdly, the most visually prevalent SASSA grant scams are those peddling fake ‘re-registration, double-pay or back-pay’ notices, with a SASSA logo attached, via social media.
While still in its infancy in social grants, the AI tools scammers use are only getting more sophisticated. Deepfake videos/voice messages can be used to promote fake and fraudulent schemes. It only takes a three-second clip to clone a voice/face.
These could be used for polished deepfake messages that look and sound like official SASSA notices. Or, more concerningly, deepfake SASSA officials who sound credible on phone calls, WhatsApp messages, asking for your banking details. Moreover, the four-million older persons on grants are especially exposed, since they tend to be most trusting.
So, how can you protect yourself against SASSA grant scams? It’s difficult because the agency’s strict review and biometric verification drive is ideal for scammers to exploit. Nevertheless, there are precautions you can take besides just ignoring every message sent to you:
Basically, always stay alert and skeptical. Criminal syndicates may have better AI tools but the SASSA grant scams playbook is broadly the same. Fake urgency and a request for your personal details that you should never disclose …
But what do you think? Have you seen and/or nearly fallen for any SASSA grant scams recently? If so, please share your thoughts in the comments section below …
