Kaizer Chiefs Will Beat Orlando Pirates Former Pirates Superfan Backs Chiefs

Former Orlando Pirates superfan Joy “Mama Joy” Chauke has backed Kaizer Chiefs to beat the Buccaneers in Saturday’s Soweto Derby, predicting that Amakhosi will emerge with all three points at FNB Stadium.

Speaking to KickOff for its Supporters Forum feature, Chauke said she believes the derby presents an opportunity for Chiefs to turn their recent fortunes around, despite Pirates enjoying success both domestically and in continental competition.

“Kuyokhala abantu [it will end in tears]. Kaizer Chiefs is winning. Forward with Amakhosi,” Chauke declared.

The prediction is notable given her long association with Orlando Pirates. Chauke supported the Soweto giants for 32 years before leaving the club in November 2021 by choice to become a prominent supporter of Royal AM FC.

Despite that history, she believes Chiefs have the conditions needed to claim victory in the latest meeting between the fierce rivals.

Chauke argued that Soweto derbies do not always follow form, suggesting that the team considered less successful going into the match can emerge victorious. She pointed to Pirates’ recent achievements at home and in the CAF Champions League, contrasting them with Chiefs’ failure to win in the CAF Confederation Cup.

“In the derby most of the time it’s the team that is not playing well that wins. To balance things,” she told KickOff.

She added that luck often plays a decisive role in these encounters, where pressure, atmosphere and the importance of bragging rights can make the result difficult to predict.

“So since God loves all, he will give Chiefs the derby come Saturday. Without luck you will never win the Soweto Derby. You need luck to win the derby. Underdogs always thrive in the Soweto Derby,” Chauke said.

The former Pirates supporter also singled out Chiefs midfielder Ndlovu, expressing confidence that he could help prevent Pirates’ players from controlling the game as they wish.

The Soweto Derby remains one of South African football’s most closely watched fixtures, with both clubs carrying huge expectations from their supporters. Saturday’s Betway Premiership meeting offers Chiefs a chance to challenge their rivals, while Pirates will be aiming to maintain their momentum.

Mama Joy’s prediction adds another voice to the build-up, but the outcome will ultimately be decided on the pitch at FNB Stadium.
