The company’s 2026 Sustainable Business Report records 46.4 billion transactions valued at Ksh 41.68 trillion during the financial year, marking a significant increase in activity on the platform.

Transaction volumes grew by 25.1 per cent from 37.1 billion in FY2025, while the total value of transactions increased by 8.9 per cent from Ksh 38.27 trillion.

The figures show that the number of transactions is growing faster than the amount of money being moved. This reflects increased frequency of use, with customers relying on M-PESA for a wider range of payments and financial activities.

On average, the platform processed about 127 million transactions daily, equivalent to approximately 88,000 transactions every minute. The total transaction value translates to roughly Ksh 114 billion per day.

Consumer and business payments accounted for a substantial share of the activity recorded during the year.

Safaricom reported that consumer payments generated Ksh 74.5 billion in revenue, while business payments contributed Ksh56.7 billion. Revenue from global payments reached Ksh 10 billion.

Overall, M-PESA revenue increased by 13.4 per cent to Ksh 182.7 billion, accounting for 45.6 per cent of Safaricom Kenya’s service revenue.

The platform’s growth has coincided with an expansion in its merchant network. The number of businesses accepting M-PESA payments rose by 71 per cent to approximately 3.1 million from 1.8 million in the previous financial year.

The increase in merchant numbers gives more traders access to digital payments, while customers can use the service to pay for goods and services without handling cash.

Safaricom also recorded growth in active customers. The number of people who used M-PESA within a month rose to approximately 41 million from 35.8 million in FY2025.

Beyond payments, M-PESA has continued to expand its lending, savings and investment products.

The number of consumer credit customers increased to 17.7 million from 7.9 million in the previous financial year. Fuliza, which enables eligible customers to complete transactions when their account balance is insufficient, recorded 18.1 million borrowing customers.

The growth in digital lending has increased the reach of credit services offered through the platform. Safaricom says it uses data-driven eligibility and affordability assessments, with artificial intelligence-supported models subject to validation and human oversight.

Savings and investment services also recorded an increase in activity. Active wealth-management customers rose to 2.2 million from 628,244, while assets under management increased to Ksh 21.1 billion from Ksh 9.8 billion.

Safaricom also highlighted M-PESA Kadogo, which allows qualifying low-value transactions to be completed without customer charges. Person-to-person transfers of Ksh100 and below and merchant payments of Ksh200 and below qualify under the initiative.

The growth in activity has increased the demands on M-PESA’s technology infrastructure.

Safaricom said its Fintech 2.0 programme increased processing capacity from 4,500 to 6,000 transactions per second, with the ability to scale beyond 12,000 transactions per second. The company reported platform availability of 99.999 per cent.

The upgraded infrastructure is designed to support rising transaction volumes and provide greater flexibility for introducing new services and integrating additional products.

With transaction volumes, merchant numbers and financial services all expanding, M-PESA remains a major part of Safaricom’s business. The latest results show that its role extends beyond transferring money, encompassing payments, credit, savings and investments used by individuals and businesses across Kenya.
