Ruto Announces Bayern Munich vs Ajax Clash to Open Raila Odinga Stadium in January 2027
President William Ruto has announced that German giants Bayern Munich will face Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam in a historic match to officially open the Raila Odinga International Stadium in Nairobi on January 5, 2027.
The announcement made on Wednesday, October 28, has generated excitement among Kenyan football fans eager to witness top European clubs play on home soil.
According to Ajax’s official website the 60,000 seat stadium formerly known as Talanta Stadium will host the highly anticipated encounter. The club confirmed that the match will also form part of its preparations for the second half of the season.
Bayern Munich and Ajax are among Europe’s most respected football clubs with a combined total of ten European Cup and UEFA Champions League titles according to the organisers.
The stadium is named in honour of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga following President Ruto’s announcement in December 2025 that the facility would carry his name.
The opening match comes as Kenya prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Uganda and Tanzania. The new stadium is expected to serve as one of the key venues for the continental competition.
According to the Kenyan Parliament construction progress has been significant although some technical and operational requirements remain to be addressed.
The Bayern Munich versus Ajax encounter is expected to attract international attention and offer Kenyan supporters a memorable football experience.
