Kindiki Announces Sh55 Million Othaya Stadium as Government Expands Sports Facilities

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has announced that the government is expanding sports facilities across Kenya, with the Sh55 million Othaya Stadium in Nyeri County expected to support local talent and community sporting activities.

In a statement shared on his official X account on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, Kindiki said the government was undertaking a major programme to upgrade existing stadiums and construct new facilities across the country.

“Kenya is undertaking its most ambitious sports facility upgrade programme ever,” he stated.

The Deputy President said the iconic 60,000-seater Talanta Stadium and the upgrades at Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums had been completed.

He added that 33 international-standard stadiums were under construction in different towns and cities, with some already complete.

Each of the smaller stadium projects costs about Sh1 billion, according to his statement.

Kindiki explained that the large stadiums would host sub-national, national and international competitions, while smaller facilities would provide opportunities for young people to develop their sporting abilities.

“While big stadiums will host sub-national, national and international sport competitions, smaller facilities like the 55 million shillings Othaya Stadium under construction will support community level sport events and the identification and nurturing of local sport talent,” he said.

He added that the local facilities would also help keep young people engaged in productive activities and away from social vices.

The Othaya Stadium project is expected to provide a venue for local sporting competitions and help identify promising athletes who can receive further training and support.
