Just Days After Meeting Kalonzo, Gachagua Predicts a Top Leader Will Soon Ditch the Opposition
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has hinted that one of the key opposition leaders could walk away from the united opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Gachagua has raised questions about the ability of opposition principals to remain together as they negotiate how to select one presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto.
Although he did not identify the leader he believes could leave the camp, his remarks come at a time when several opposition figures are positioning themselves for the 2027 presidential race.
The DCP party leader has previously predicted that one opposition principal will leave after the team settles on its preferred presidential candidate. He has argued that not every leader will be satisfied with the final decision.
Gachagua made similar remarks in September, saying that one contender would eventually walk away while the remaining leaders supported the person selected to represent the opposition.
His comments have gained fresh attention as the opposition continues consultations over its presidential ticket.
On Monday, October 26, Gachagua hosted Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka at his Wamunyoro home in Nyeri County. The meeting focused on bringing their political bases together and working towards a single candidate to face Ruto.
However, the talks also exposed differences over when the opposition should announce its presidential candidate. Kalonzo’s camp reportedly favours an earlier decision, while Gachagua and his allies want more time before the final announcement.
On October 28, fresh political attention has centred on the efforts by Gachagua, Kalonzo and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna to build a united front against the President.
The opposition faces a difficult task of balancing individual ambitions, regional interests and demands from supporters as the election approaches.
While Gachagua has expressed confidence that the leaders can eventually agree, the question of who will secure the presidential ticket remains unanswered.
For now, he has not named the person he believes could abandon the opposition.
Could a disagreement over the 2027 presidential ticket eventually split the united opposition?
