Gloria Orwoba Questions Alfred Mutua’s Absence From Ruto’s Russia Trip Amid Recruitment Concerns
Former nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba has questioned the absence of Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua from President William Ruto’s Russia trip, using the opportunity to raise concerns about Kenyans reportedly recruited to fight in the Russia-Ukraine war.
In her statement, Orwoba directly addressed President Ruto, suggesting that Kenyans expected Mutua to accompany him because of concerns surrounding alleged fraudulent overseas job recruitment schemes that have reportedly exposed Kenyans to dangerous situations abroad.
“Your Excellency William Samoei Ruto, you forgot to carry your super Cabinet Secretary Dr. Alfred Mutua with you to Russia,” Orwoba stated.
Her remarks focused on reports that Kenyans had been recruited through questionable diaspora employment opportunities and subsequently found themselves involved in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The allegations have raised concerns about the safety of Kenyans seeking employment outside the country.
Orwoba argued that Mutua’s presence during the Russia trip would have been significant given the concerns surrounding the recruitment of Kenyans for jobs abroad. Her statement appeared to challenge the government’s handling of the matter and the responsibility of relevant ministries to protect citizens from potentially fraudulent employment arrangements.
She further questioned Mutua’s suitability for handling the issue, asking whether he was only fit for what she referred to as “Cobra Squad Manenos.” The remark added a political dimension to her criticism, drawing attention to the Cabinet Secretary’s public responsibilities.
The statement also places renewed attention on the broader question of how the government protects Kenyans who pursue employment opportunities overseas. For many families, foreign employment represents an important source of income, making transparency, proper recruitment procedures and the safety of workers essential concerns.
However, the specific circumstances surrounding individual recruitment cases require verification, and allegations of fraudulent recruitment should be investigated by the relevant authorities before responsibility is assigned.
As the debate continues, Kenyans may expect the government to provide clear information about reported recruitment cases, the welfare of affected citizens and the measures being taken to prevent similar incidents.
