Gachagua Declares Nairobi a ‘One-Term Region’ as He Sends Warning to Ruto Allies Ahead of 2027

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has predicted a difficult political battle for leaders allied to President William Ruto in Nairobi, claiming that their chances of retaining elective seats in the 2027 General Election are slim.

Speaking during a television interview on Wednesday, October 28, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader said the political ground in the capital had changed since the 2022 elections.

Gachagua described Nairobi as a “one-term” zone for politicians associated with Ruto, arguing that the president’s allies could struggle to convince voters to support them again.

“Any leader who associates with William Ruto, we will not be elected,” Gachagua declared during the interview.

He maintained that his political network had played a major role in helping Ruto secure votes in Nairobi during the previous election, but claimed that the support had since shifted away from the president.

According to Gachagua, his political bloc contributed approximately 500,000 votes to Ruto’s performance in the capital. He insisted that those voters would no longer support the president’s allies in the next election.

The former deputy president also expressed confidence in the strength of DCP, Wiper and other parties associated with the United Opposition.

But will the opposition manage to turn that confidence into victory at the ballot?

Gachagua also took aim at the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), arguing that the party had lost much of the influence it enjoyed under its former leader, Raila Odinga.

He claimed that ODM had previously benefited from cooperation with Wiper, which he described as having a significant electoral following in Nairobi.

The DCP leader further dismissed the political influence of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, suggesting that their support would not be enough to determine the city’s political direction.

His remarks come as political leaders begin positioning themselves for the 2027 elections, with parties working to strengthen their grassroots networks and identify potential candidates.

Gachagua also weighed in on the possible political ambitions of Raila Odinga Junior and Winnie Odinga.

He suggested that Raila Junior could win a Nairobi seat but warned that aligning himself with Ruto could undermine his chances.

On Winnie, Gachagua argued that her political prospects would depend partly on the alliance she chooses.

However, the former deputy president did not present polling figures to support his predictions.

With the 2027 election approaching, Nairobi remains a key battleground. Whether Gachagua’s forecast becomes reality will ultimately depend on the candidates, political alliances and decisions voters make at the ballot box.
