Chairman Wontumi “Poisoning Plot” Rocks Nsawam Prison – Five Inmates Transferred as Aide D
A dramatic twist has emerged in the incarceration of former NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, with his aide alleging that some inmates attempted to poison the politician behind bars.
Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, a senior aide to Wontumi, dropped the bombshell on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, during an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, as Wontumi marked exactly 100 days in prison .
“Chairman is okay. We haven’t received any medical reports from the doctors. But I have received indications that over the past week, some prison inmates attempted to poison him,” Dr Boakye-Danquah stated .
According to the aide, Wontumi informed him of the alleged incident when he appeared in court on Tuesday. He also revealed that he had spoken to the prison commander, who assured him that investigations were underway .
“He mentioned that to me today when he came to court, and I have spoken to the commander, and the commander said he has asked them to investigate the matter, so he will come back to me on that issue. This attempted poisoning of his life happened a few days ago,” he added .
In a subsequent interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Dr Boakye-Danquah disclosed that five inmates at Nsawam Prison have since been transferred following the alleged plot .
He explained that the plot reportedly came to light after someone overheard the inmates discussing plans to poison Wontumi. The individual alerted Wontumi, prompting concerns about his safety .
“I contacted the officer in charge, and he confirmed it and assured me that investigations are ongoing. The officer said a committee has been set up to probe the incident,” Dr Boakye-Danquah said .
Despite the grave allegation, the aide confirmed that no medical reports had been received in connection with the claim, and the circumstances surrounding the alleged attempt remain under investigation .
He also noted that Wontumi remained calm and was not frightened by the alleged threat .
Chairman Wontumi is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence after being convicted of permitting mining activities on his Samreboi concession without approval from the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources . He is seeking temporary release while challenging his conviction and sentence at the Court of Appeal .
Amid the shocking allegations, Dr Boakye-Danquah reiterated Wontumi’s call for comprehensive reforms to Ghana’s prison system, with greater emphasis on rehabilitation, inmate welfare, and the reintegration of prisoners into society .
