Vice President Say Government Cannot Pay Teachers Because They’re Too Many,Interesting—PK
Ghanaian social commentator P.K. Sarpong has expressed concern over the government’s continued delays in settling teachers’ promotion arrears, questioning the reported explanation given by Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.
The commentator challenged the claim that the large number of teachers has made it difficult to clear the outstanding payments. He argued that such delays discourage professional growth and undermine the value of promotion within the education sector.
In a Facebook post, Sarpong questioned the need for teachers to spend their own money pursuing higher qualifications and sitting promotion examinations when the financial benefits attached to their success may take a long time to arrive.
He pointed out that teachers who meet the requirements for promotion are expected to assume greater responsibilities, yet some must endure prolonged delays before receiving their corresponding financial entitlements.
Using sarcasm to highlight the situation, Sarpong suggested that promotion examinations could include a question about working hard, securing a promotion and waiting indefinitely to receive the money owed.
He further argued that if the number of teachers is the main obstacle, the government must clarify why educators should continue investing in professional development without certainty about when they will receive their financial rewards.
Sarpong maintained that teachers deserve timely payment for the promotions they earn. According to him, professional advancement cannot be fully recognised when increased qualifications and responsibilities are not matched by the financial benefits due to educators.
