The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has declared that President Bola Tinubu lacked the energy and capacity to govern Nigeria, insisting that the country needed new leadership to address its worsening challenges.

Obi also warned against electoral manipulation in the 2027 general elections, declaring that his party would resist any attempt to rig the polls.

He spoke on Monday at a dinner in Abuja organised to present certificates of return to the NDCโ€™s candidates for the 2027 general elections.

The former Anambra State governor accused the Tinubu administration of failing to address the countryโ€™s challenges, arguing that Nigerians were yearning for a change in leadership.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan and industrialist Aliko Dangote have called on the federal government to prioritise job creation and revive abandoned social intervention programmes to tackle terrorism, banditry, and other security threats.

Jonathan urged the government to revisit the Almajiri education programme and the Great Green Wall project. At the same time, Dangote stressed that military operations alone could not defeat terrorism without addressing unemployment and poverty.

They spoke at the public presentation of Beyond the Bullets: Policing Terrorism in a Democratic System, a book written by former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar.

Jonathanโ€™s speech, delivered by his former chief of staff, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, said the two programmes introduced during his administration were designed to address socio-economic problems that could fuel insecurity.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has revealed that its decision to pay โ‚ฆ100,000 weekly to people quarantined over possible exposure to Ebola was an unplanned, temporary measure introduced on compassionate grounds after some threatened to leave the facilities.

The NCDC Director-General, Jide Idris, disclosed this on Monday during an appearance on Channels Televisionโ€™s Politics Today, explaining that the agency introduced the payments to address concerns raised by quarantined contacts who said their absence from home was affecting their families and businesses.

Mr Idris said the authorities had taken affected people out of their normal environments for public health reasons, making it necessary to consider their welfare while ensuring they complied with quarantine measures.

โ€œThose people who were in the quarantine area, there are people who never planned to be there. We took them out of their comfort zones to put them there for public health reasons,โ€ he said.

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has said President Bola Tinubu has approved the provision of 500,000 solar-powered lights for rural households in the South-East.

Kalu disclosed this at the flag-off of the Renewed Hope Light-Up initiative, during which 26 transformers and 10,000 solar-powered lights and fans were distributed to communities in Bende Federal Constituency, Abia State.

He said 42,000 households in the constituency had been earmarked to benefit from the initiative, with the first batch of 10,000 solar-powered lights and fans expected to be delivered within two weeks.

According to him, 1,000 units had already been distributed as a pilot scheme, with representatives from the federal constituencyโ€™s wards confirming their functionality.
