This is not the time to ask victims for interviews – Dr Momo Lartey to media

Gender Minister Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey has urged journalists to stop pressuring affected students at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) for interviews, saying the victims are overwhelmed by repeated questions.

Speaking to the media during her visit to the school on Monday, October 26, 2026, Dr Lartey said the media should allow the students time and space to engage with authorities without the added pressure of public interviews.

“The victims have also been overwhelmed with questions,” she said. “They’ve had media persons harassing them for interviews, and this is not the time you ask a victim to come for an interview.”

The minister appealed to journalists to consider how their approach affects the children, saying the priority should be helping victims feel comfortable enough to participate in the process.

“I will appeal to you,” she said, asking the media not to insist that affected students tell their stories directly when they may not be ready.

“Somewhere, somehow, before the day goes to an end, we’ll be engaging the victims, we’ll be engaging families, we’ll be engaging students,” she said.

“By the end of the day, there should be a converging point so that we are not working in silos,” she added.

She concluded by appealing to the media to help victims feel safe and trust the process.

“Let us make stories that can be told from a different point of view, directly from the children,” she said, urging journalists to exercise care in how they approach the affected students.
