Good News Hits All NPP Members
Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly called Adenta Kumi, has been released after being detained by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) over allegations of publishing false news.
Kumi, a youth activist and former parliamentary aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was arrested on May 23, 2025. His detention followed comments he reportedly made on social media and on radio about a petition he presented to the President concerning the committee probing the Chief Justice.
The former aspirant had called for the committee to be dissolved, claiming that alleged misconduct involving members of the judiciary could affect the credibility of the inquiry.
As part of his allegations, Kumi said that on May 15, 2025, after the committee held its first meeting, Justices Pwamang and Adibu-Asiedu, alongside Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi, were allegedly seen dining with Thaddeus Sory, counsel for petitioner Daniel Ofori.
According to Kumi, the meeting took place at Santoku Restaurant in the Airport Residential Area of Accra. He further alleged that discussions relating to the petition could be heard during the gathering, raising questions about whether the investigation was being conducted impartially.
The claims attracted public attention and fuelled debate about the independence of Ghanaβs judiciary, the right of citizens to express concerns about public institutions and the powers of security agencies.
While supporters of Kumi condemned his arrest and questioned the circumstances surrounding it, the case also highlighted the sensitivity of public allegations involving judicial officers and ongoing legal proceedings.
His release came after discussions involving Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and security officials, bringing an end to his immediate detention.
The case has since contributed to wider calls for transparency and accountability in the handling of sensitive national matters. It has also renewed debate over how authorities should address allegations of misconduct while respecting freedom of expression and safeguarding the independence of the courts.
