Speak Like a Lawyer — Afia Schwarzenegger Criticises Serwaa Amihere Over Akabenezer’s Chains
Ghanaian media personality Afia Schwarzenegger has criticised broadcaster Serwaa Amihere over her comments about comedian and actor Akabenezer’s chains, describing the remarks as uncalled for and unhealthy while urging her to be more careful with her choice of words.
Afia addressed the issue in a message directed at Serwaa, acknowledging her admiration for the broadcaster’s personal growth and professional development but expressing disappointment over what she considered an unnecessary comment about another person’s jewellery.
Although Afia made it clear that she holds Serwaa in high regard, she disagreed with the way the broadcaster reportedly spoke about Akabenezer’s chains, arguing that the statement was inappropriate and could be interpreted as looking down on someone because of the jewellery they wear.
“Serwaa you are somebody that I truly love and admire because of how you’ve grown and evolved. However that statement you made about Akabenezer’s chain was uncalled for and unhealthy,” Afia stated.
She further recalled the situation in 2020, claiming that Serwaa was buying copper jewellery at a time when some other people were already wearing gold, yet they did not use their possessions to look down on others.
“In 2020, you were buying these copers while some of us were wearing gold, but we never looked down on people,” she added.
Afia’s comments focused on the importance of showing respect towards others regardless of the type or value of jewellery they wear, suggesting that personal possessions should not become a basis for making remarks that could undermine another person’s dignity.
Her response also brought attention to the influence public figures have when making statements, particularly when their comments concern other personalities who may become the subject of public scrutiny.
As a well-known media personality, Serwaa Amihere frequently engages with issues that attract public interest, making the manner in which she expresses her views an important part of how her statements are received.
Afia acknowledged Serwaa’s professional development but maintained that her position as a broadcaster required her to exercise caution when speaking publicly, especially when discussing other people.
She concluded her criticism with direct advice on how Serwaa should approach opportunities to express herself, drawing on the broadcaster’s legal background to emphasise the need for measured communication.
“When you are given the opportunity to talk, speak like a lawyer,” Afia said.
The remark suggested that Serwaa should use the precision and careful reasoning associated with legal practice when making public statements, rather than making comments that could be perceived as dismissive or disrespectful.
Afia’s message combined praise for Serwaa’s growth with a clear disagreement over the comments about Akabenezer’s chains, placing the emphasis on respect, responsible communication and the need to avoid judging others based on their possessions.
Her intervention has added another perspective to the discussion surrounding the broadcaster’s remarks, with Afia maintaining that admiration for someone does not prevent her from calling out statements she considers inappropriate.
