Ruto Heads to Russia for Major Africa Forum as Kenya Eyes Trade Deals

Kenya’s President William Ruto is expected to travel to Moscow, Russia, to attend the Third Russia–Africa Summit and the accompanying Russia–Africa Economic and Humanitarian Forum, scheduled for October 28 and 29, 2026.

The meeting will bring together African leaders, government officials, business representatives and other stakeholders to discuss ways of strengthening relations between Russia and African countries. Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to co-chair the summit alongside Burundi’s President Évariste Ndayishimiye, the current chairperson of the African Union.

Kenya Seeks New Trade Opportunities: Kenya is expected to use the meeting to pursue stronger economic ties with Russia, including opportunities to increase exports of tea, coffee and horticultural products.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has already travelled to Moscow ahead of the summit. The Kenyan delegation is expected to pursue discussions on trade, investment, economic development and diplomatic cooperation.

The forum’s programme includes discussions on food security, energy, digital technology, payment systems and investment. These issues are important to African countries seeking new markets, improved access to technology and stronger international partnerships.

Ukraine War Issue Could Draw Attention:Ruto’s expected visit comes at a sensitive time for Kenya, as families continue seeking answers about Kenyans reportedly recruited to fight in the Russia–Ukraine war.

Kenya’s government has faced growing pressure to explain the circumstances surrounding the recruitment of its citizens, including those reported killed or missing on the battlefield.

According to reporting by Kenyan media, the issue remains a concern for affected families who want assistance in tracing their relatives and securing the return of those still alive.

The summit therefore presents an opportunity for Kenya to pursue its economic interests while addressing sensitive matters affecting its citizens.

The outcome of the meetings, particularly any agreements on trade and discussions concerning Kenyans caught up in the war, will be important to watch as the two countries continue their diplomatic engagement.
