Revealed: What Kalonzo & Gachagua Failed to Agree on During Their Wamunyoro Meeting

Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua have differed over a key decision that could shape the United Opposition’s strategy ahead of the August 10, 2027 General Election.

The two leaders met at Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri on Monday, October 26, amid ongoing consultations aimed at uniting opposition parties behind one presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto.

However, the timing of announcing their joint presidential candidate emerged as a point of disagreement, with the two camps holding different views on when the decision should be made.

According to reports, Kalonzo’s team wants the opposition to settle on its flagbearer as early as December 2026. Supporters of an early announcement argue that the selected candidate would have sufficient time to mobilise resources, build a national campaign network and establish international connections before the election.

Gachagua and some of his allies, however, favour delaying the decision until closer to the election. They reportedly fear that announcing the candidate too early could give Ruto an opportunity to exploit dissatisfaction among opposition leaders who might lose the contest for the ticket.

Gatanga MP Edward Muriu and Embakasi Central MP Benjamin Gathiru, popularly known as Mejja Donk, have also called for more time to strengthen partnerships and secure commitments from coalition members.

They warned that disgruntled politicians could break away and pursue separate presidential bids if the process does not accommodate the interests of different parties.

Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua confirmed that no final date had been agreed upon, although he acknowledged growing public impatience over the prolonged uncertainty.

Wambua suggested that an announcement around Christmas could be welcomed by Kenyans, but maintained that the final decision rests with the opposition principals.

People’s Party of Kenya leader Ndindi Nyoro also called for an objective and fair selection process, saying his party would support whoever emerges as the candidate.

Despite the differences, Kalonzo and Gachagua have committed to bringing their political bases together and consulting other opposition leaders.

The debate echoes previous elections in which opposition coalitions struggled to agree on presidential candidates before eventually settling on a common flagbearer.

With the 2027 election approaching, the timing of the announcement remains a crucial test of the opposition’s ability to maintain unity while balancing competing political ambitions.
