Manqoba Mngqithi to Kaizer Chiefs? Yanga Exit Reignites Coaching Speculation

The experienced South African coach is back on the market, but is a move to Naturena finally on the cards?

Manqoba Mngqithi’s departure from Tanzanian giants Young Africans SC has reignited speculation about a possible move to Kaizer Chiefs. But while reports suggest renewed interest, Amakhosi’s next coaching decision remains far from settled.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach left Yanga in October, just three months after taking charge. His departure came despite an encouraging start that included winning the Tanzanian Community Shield and guiding the club into the CAF Champions League group stages. African Football reported on his exit.

Now, attention has turned back to South Africa.

According to a report published by The South African on 26 October, Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly reopened discussions with Mngqithi. The report, however, relies on claims circulating through football insider Innocent Mkhabela rather than an official announcement from either party.

Mngqithi is no stranger to the Chiefs conversation. Earlier this year, he spoke publicly about previous interest from the Soweto giants, saying discussions had taken place but failed to produce an appointment.

His experience with Golden Arrows and Sundowns has made him a familiar name whenever Chiefs consider their coaching options.

However, interest, reported talks and a completed deal are three very different things.

Chiefs’ current coach, Fernando da Cruz, is under pressure following the club’s exit from the CAF Confederation Cup at the hands of Red Arrows.

The disappointment has fuelled debate among supporters about whether a change in leadership could improve the team’s fortunes.

Yet Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr publicly reaffirmed the club’s support for Da Cruz and his technical team after the continental setback, according to Business Day.

A further report published on 26 October said Chiefs had rejected the latest claims linking Mngqithi with Naturena. That denial makes it especially important not to present the reported negotiations as confirmed fact.

Mngqithi brings extensive domestic experience and a track record of working within demanding football environments. His time at Sundowns included involvement in a highly successful technical setup, while his work at Golden Arrows demonstrated his ability to develop players and build competitive teams.

For Chiefs, the question is whether the club believes a coaching change is necessary or whether Da Cruz deserves more time to implement his ideas.

For now, Mngqithi’s next destination remains uncertain.

Could the experienced tactician finally get his chance at Naturena, or will the Chiefs hierarchy stick with Da Cruz? Until credible confirmation emerges from the club or Mngqithi’s representatives, the story remains one to watch rather than a done deal.
