Mahama Sends Powerful Message to Brazil’s Lula After Election Victory
Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has congratulated Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his re-election, expressing his commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries and promoting the interests of nations across the Global South.
In a Facebook post, Mahama described Lula’s re-election as a deserved achievement and reaffirmed his intention to deepen cooperation between Ghana and Brazil.
Mahama also emphasised the importance of the Accra Reset initiative as a platform for advancing shared development priorities and strengthening the collective voice of countries in the Global South.
“Congratulations to President Luiz Lula da Silva on your well-deserved re-election as President of Brazil. Brazil and Ghana share a rich history, and I look forward to further strengthening our bilateral relations.
“Together, through the Accra Reset initiative, we will continue championing the Global South agenda for the betterment of our peoples,” Mahama said.
The congratulatory message followed Brazil’s presidential runoff election held on Sunday, October 25, 2026, in which Lula defeated his challenger, Flávio Bolsonaro of the Liberal Party, to secure another term in office.
Results announced by Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court showed that Lula obtained 51.79 per cent of the valid votes, equivalent to 64,256,232 ballots.
Bolsonaro secured 48.21 per cent, representing 59,826,041 votes.
Lula’s victory extends the 80-year-old leader’s presidency after his return to power in 2023. He previously served as Brazil’s president from 2003 to 2010.
