Labour Commission directs Labour Minister to engage JUSAG over planned strike on Nov. 2

This The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations to lead an engagement with the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) over its threatened strike, and to submit a report on the engagement by Friday, November 6, 2026.

The directive, contained in a statement marked ‘Very Urgent’ and signed by the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Bernice A. Welbeck, after JUSAG had fixed November 2 to begin its indefinite strike.

JUSAG, in a “Notification of Industrial Action” dated October 23, 2026, served on the Commission, alleged that government has failed and/or refused to address its concerns regarding the review of salaries and related allowances for staff of the Judicial Service.

The Association has demanded full resolution of the issues, failing which it has threatened to embark on strike effective November 2, 2026.

In its response, the NLC said: “We write to acknowledge receipt of ‘Notification of Industrial Action’ dated 23rd October, 2026 from the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) served on the Commission.”

“In the said notice, the Association alleges that the Government has failed and/or refused to address their concerns regarding the review of salaries and related allowances for staff of the Association.”

“Consequently, the Association has called for a full resolution of the issues, failing which it has threatened to embark on strike effective 2nd November, 2026.”

The Commission has therefore requested the Minister for Jobs, Labour and Employment Relations to lead discussions with all parties mentioned in the notice and to engage the Association representing the workers to discuss the issues in contention.

“The National Labour Commission hereby requests the Hon. Minister of Jobs, Labour and Employment Relations to lead discussions with those in the Notice as in paragraph ‘one’ above and to engage the Association representing the workers to discuss the issues in contention,” the statement said.

“A report on the engagement should be submitted to the Commission by Friday, 6th November, 2026,” it added.

Meanwhile, the Commission has advised JUSAG to stay its intended action following the intervention, in pursuance of Section 161 of the Labour Act, 2003, Act 651.

“Meanwhile with this intervention, the Association is advised to stay the intended action in pursuance of Section 161 of the Labour Act, 2003, Act 651,” the Commission stated.

JUSAG had earlier demanded approval of the recommendations of the Judicial Council on the 2026 salary review by the end of October 2026, and payment of the reviewed salaries in November 2026, together with arrears from January to October 2026.
