Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu Reveals How Akufo-Addo’s Arrogance and Corruption Led To NPP’s Defeat

Former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has attributed the NPP’s loss in the 2024 general elections to internal problems, shortcomings in leadership and growing public dissatisfaction with the Akufo-Addo government.

He said allegations of increasing corruption and perceptions of arrogance among government officials caused some voters to lose confidence in the party, with several supporters reportedly choosing not to vote.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu further pointed to a warning from Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in 2017. The Asantehene had cautioned that the NPP could face political repercussions if it failed to respond to the concerns of Ghanaians.

According to Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the party did not take the warning seriously enough, and this contributed to its defeat. He also noted that the limited enthusiasm witnessed during campaign activities nationwide was an early sign of the NPP’s declining electoral prospects.

He dismissed suggestions that ethnic or tribal factors determined the election results, maintaining that divisions within the party and weaknesses in governance were the more important causes.

He called on the NPP to conduct a thorough review of its performance, address its shortcomings and introduce meaningful reforms to rebuild public trust before the 2028 elections.
