I Can Describe Akufo-Addo As One Of The Worst Presidents In NPP – Boakye Agyarko Drops Bombshell

Former Energy Minister Boakye Kyeremanteng Agyarko has criticised Nana Akufo-Addo’s time in office, describing it as a wasted opportunity that left the New Patriotic Party (NPP) struggling with internal divisions and a damaged public image.

During an interview on Asempa FM, Agyarko recalled that Akufo-Addo entered the presidency with considerable public goodwill and promised to combat corruption, protect state resources and advance Ghana’s development through the Ghana Beyond Aid agenda.

He argued, however, that economic difficulties, divisions within the NPP and the party’s defeat in the 2024 elections overshadowed the administration’s record. He also claimed that the former president’s leadership weakened the party’s organisational structures.

Agyarko alleged that corruption increased during Akufo-Addo’s tenure and that illegal mining contributed to the destruction of water bodies. He further accused the former president of disregarding advice and giving too much influence to relatives and close associates.

On his political ambitions, Agyarko revealed that former President John Agyekum Kufuor had repeatedly urged him over approximately seven years to contest for the NPP national chairmanship. He said Kufuor believes he can help restore the party’s principles, promote unity and strengthen its structures after its electoral defeat.

Agyarko explained that Kufuor’s continued encouragement contributed significantly to his decision to seek the position.

He pledged that, if elected, he would strengthen accountability, uphold party discipline and reconcile competing factions within the NPP. He also called on party members to confront internal problems and avoid repeating the mistakes he believes contributed to their defeat.

His remarks have drawn differing reactions from NPP supporters. Some agree with his assessment of Akufo-Addo’s leadership, while others defend the former president’s record by highlighting programmes such as Free Senior High School and Agenda 111.

The disagreement underscores the ongoing debate over the NPP’s electoral loss and the reforms required to rebuild the party. Agyarko believes that greater transparency, unity and responsible leadership will be crucial to restoring public trust and improving the party’s prospects.
