Itumeleng Khune Reveals Why Elias Mokwana Could Be the Right Signing for Kaizer Chiefs

Former Kaizer Chiefs captain Itumeleng Khune has backed the idea of signing Elias Mokwana, explaining why the Bafana Bafana winger could be a valuable addition to the Soweto club.

Mokwana has reportedly been offered to Kaizer Chiefs by his representatives following his departure from Tunisian side Espérance in September. The 27-year-old became a free agent after a proposed move to Moroccan club Wydad Athletic Club reportedly collapsed because of registration issues.

With Chiefs looking to strengthen their attacking options under head coach Fernando da Cruz, Mokwana’s availability could present an opportunity for the club to improve its squad. However, there has been no official confirmation that Amakhosi intend to complete the signing.

Khune believes the winger possesses the technical ability, confidence and attacking qualities required to make a difference at Naturena. He also highlighted Mokwana’s experience in continental football, suggesting that the player could contribute beyond his performances on the pitch by helping younger teammates develop.

Explaining why he believes the winger deserves consideration, Khune said, “Mokwana reminds me of Jabu “Shuffle” back then because he is very skilful and he is not afraid to take on his defender. He can also create and score goals, not to mention his continental experience can be very useful for AmaKhosi because the youngsters can also look up to him for guidance.”

Khune’s comments underline his belief that Mokwana could bring creativity, direct attacking play and valuable experience to the Chiefs squad. His ability to challenge defenders and contribute to goals could offer the team another option in the final third.

Former Jomo Cosmos midfielder and football analyst Mark Haskins has also expressed support for the potential move. He believes Mokwana has the quality to strengthen the Soweto giants and questioned why other leading South African clubs did not pursue him before his move abroad.

Haskins said, “I like him and I believe that he can add value to that Kaizer Chiefs team, and I was shocked that he wasn’t pursued by one of our local giants before he went abroad.”

Despite the positive assessments, Chiefs must still determine whether Mokwana fits their recruitment plans and tactical requirements. The club already has several attacking options, meaning the winger would need to compete for a regular place.

For now, Mokwana’s possible arrival remains uncertain. Support from Khune and Haskins has strengthened the argument for considering him, but the final decision rests with the Chiefs management.
