GOVERNMENT CONTRACTS BOMBSHELL! Zimbabwean Businessman Lawrence Mudzinganyama’s Company Blacklisted After Sandton Restaurant Threat Allegations

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — 27 OCTOBER 2026

Zimbabwean businessman Lawrence Mudzinganyama has suffered a major setback after his company, Moriel Infrastructure Group, was blacklisted from doing business with the South African government following mounting controversy surrounding alleged threats made against women at a Sandton restaurant.

The development marks a significant turn in the fallout from an incident that attracted widespread public attention after a video allegedly showing Mudzinganyama threatening to shoot and kill women circulated on social media.

The blacklisting comes amid growing scrutiny of the company’s public-sector business dealings, with government departments launching investigations into contracts and questions surrounding its construction industry contractor gradings.

Although the company’s blacklisting represents a separate development from the criminal proceedings against Mudzinganyama, the two matters have become closely linked in the public debate over accountability and the conduct expected of individuals and businesses operating in South Africa.

Mudzinganyama was arrested in September 2026 following the alleged incident at Vlamo restaurant in Sandton, Johannesburg.

Footage of the confrontation circulated widely online, prompting public criticism over the alleged threats directed at women at the establishment.

Following his arrest, Mudzinganyama was granted bail of R15,000. He faces 10 charges, reportedly including intimidation, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, crimen injuria and fraud.

The charges remain allegations, and their merits must be determined through the appropriate legal process.

Mudzinganyama has since apologised for his conduct, describing his threatening language as unacceptable and unjustifiable.

His apology came amid continued scrutiny of the incident and questions about the potential consequences for his business interests.

Ministers order investigations into company dealings

The controversy also prompted Transport Minister Barbara Creecy to order an investigation into Moriel Infrastructure Group’s contracts with the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL).

SANRAL plays a significant role in the development, maintenance and management of South Africa’s national road network, making the scrutiny of its procurement processes an important public-interest matter.

Separately, Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson ordered an investigation into allegations concerning the company’s Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) contractor gradings.

These gradings are important in the construction sector because they help determine the categories and sizes of projects for which contractors may qualify.

The investigations are intended to examine issues concerning the company’s public-sector dealings and contractor status. Their findings should establish whether any irregularities occurred.

The reported blacklisting represents a further setback for Moriel Infrastructure Group and raises questions about its ability to secure future government business.

However, the precise reasons, effective date and duration of the blacklisting, as well as any available appeal process, would need to be confirmed through official documentation.

The criminal case against Mudzinganyama remains separate from the investigations into his company’s contracts and contractor gradings.

As the matter develops, the focus will be on the outcome of the investigations, the legal proceedings and whether authorities identify any breaches of procurement or construction-industry rules.

For now, the case has placed renewed attention on government contracting, corporate accountability and the consequences that can follow when serious allegations involving business figures attract national scrutiny.
