The Bayern Munich striker was crowned the world’s best player at a ceremony in London on Monday, finishing ahead of France and Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe, with Lamine Yamal completing the top three.
That outcome was broadly in line with the mathematical projections of specialist website Le meilleur joueur du monde. In August, at an event in Dakar, its Senegalese supercomputer had also placed Kane first, although only narrowly.
Kane was awarded 137.3 points by the system, compared with 126.9 for Mbappe. The figures were reported by journalist Mansour Loum.
Mbappe’s performances for France, particularly at the 2026 World Cup, were judged to have been stronger than Kane’s international displays. However, the Englishman gained ground through his club achievements with Bayern Munich, while Mbappe endured a trophyless season at Real Madrid.
The two forwards recorded broadly similar attacking contributions, meaning the difference in the final assessment was largely shaped by their collective success at club level.
The Senegalese supercomputer is designed to combine a wider range of data in an attempt to provide a fairer and more objective assessment of the best players each season. It uses performances published weekly and is based on what its creators describe as a “unique and innovative calculation model”.
Its methodology aims to assess players on an equal footing, regardless of their position, and to address what it considers the limitations of the official Ballon d’Or voting process.
The award’s established criteria, set by France Football, focus on individual performances and a player’s direct influence in major matches, their honours and achievements, and fair play.
Voting is restricted to journalists from the 100 highest-ranked countries in the FIFA rankings. The results regularly generate controversy once the individual votes are made public.
The Senegal-based system therefore presents itself as an alternative way of measuring performances, using data from across a season rather than relying solely on the opinions of an international voting panel. Its forecast had Kane ahead of Mbappe before the official result in London confirmed the same order.
