FG Approves N70,000 Monthly Transport Allowance For Workers
The Federal Government has approved a monthly transport allowance of N70,000 for public service workers for six months, beginning in November 2026.
The approval was reached on Tuesday in Abuja following pressure from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over workers’ welfare and the rising cost of living.
The intervention is expected to cushion the effects of rising transportation costs on workers during the six-month period.
The resolutions were contained in a memorandum of understanding signed at the end of the meeting by the Director-General of Budget, Timi Yakubu; NLC President, Joe Ajaero; the Permanent Secretary, Service Welfare Office, Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Dr Garba Abdul S.U.; and the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi.
The meeting also addressed other outstanding workers’ welfare issues, including the payment of peculiar allowance arrears and the commencement of minimum wage negotiations. However, both parties did not reach an agreement on the effective date for implementing a new minimum wage.
