Closing The Ranks; The Standard Newspaper Reveals When The Opposition Will Name The Flagbearer
The Standard has given Rigathi Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence the front-page treatment, calling it an emerging hub for opposition leaders seeking to unite against President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In its Tuesday, October 27 edition, the newspaper splashes the story under the headline “Closing ranks”, with a cover photo showing leaders exchanging warm handshakes. The paper, which is also counting down to the polls with its “Kivumbi 2027” tag showing 287 days to go, describes the developments as a unity bid.
According to the Standard, Gachagua held talks on Monday with Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka on consolidating their respective bases before naming a joint flagbearer early next year.
The timeline is significant, because it is one of the clearest indications yet of when the opposition intends to settle the question of who will carry its banner against the government side.
The paper reports that after Kalonzo’s visit, Gachagua received DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa at the same residence. Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has also visited Wamunyoro recently, adding to the growing political traffic at the Nyeri home.
The front page lands a day after Gachagua said on his social media pages that he had held extensive consultations with Kalonzo and that the leaders had agreed to make whatever sacrifices were necessary to settle on one presidential candidate.
He later hosted Wamalwa, who arrived with a bull as a gift, and ended the day with an evening meeting with his Democracy for the Citizens Party team.
The coverage also carries a political subplot. Ruto was in Kalonzo’s Tseikuru backyard in Kitui County on the same day as part of his Ukambani development tour, directing that a road be tarmacked up to the Wiper leader’s gate. Kalonzo was in Nyeri instead, a contrast that has dominated political conversations.
Observers say the choice of “Closing ranks” as the headline reflects the opposition’s attempt to project cohesion after months of questions over whether its leaders could overcome personal ambitions.
The real test, however, will come when the name of the joint flagbearer is announced, and whether those who miss out accept the outcome.
