Chauke Under Pressure as Madlanga Commission Probes WhatsApp Chats With Late Taxi Boss
Former President Cyril Ramaphosa adviser and ANC heavyweight Dr Bejani Chauke is facing questions from investigators at the Madlanga Commission over his alleged communications with the late taxi boss Jotham “King Mswazi” Msibi.
According to reports, the commission has issued Chauke with a formal legal notice requiring him to explain his alleged connections to Msibi following the discovery of WhatsApp messages on the deceased businessman’s cellphone.
The messages reportedly date back to 2022 and 2023, a period when Chauke was working closely with Ramaphosa. Investigators are said to be examining communications that allegedly touched on sensitive national security matters.
The development comes as the Madlanga Commission investigates allegations of links between organised crime networks and individuals within South Africa’s law enforcement agencies and government structures.
The inquiry aims to establish whether criminal syndicates have gained influence within state institutions and whether any officials may have been involved in improper dealings.
Chauke has reportedly begun consulting with his legal representatives to determine how best to respond to the notice. His formal response is expected in due course.
However, the allegations and reported communications do not, on their own, establish wrongdoing by Chauke. The circumstances surrounding the messages and the nature of his relationship with Msibi remain matters for investigators to examine.
The commission’s findings could provide further insight into the alleged connections between organised crime and influential figures in South Africa’s political and security circles.
