Chaos On Waiyaki Way As Police Disperse UoN Students Protesting Lecturers’ Strike
Transport along Waiyaki Way in Nairobi was disrupted on Tuesday, October 27, after University of Nairobi students staged demonstrations over the ongoing lecturers’ strike. The protest caused traffic to grind to a halt as students set bonfires and placed stones on parts of the road, forcing drivers to either turn back or look for different routes.
This disruption impacted commuters attempting to use one of the main transportation corridors in the capital.
Tensions escalated when police arrived to break up the crowd. As reported by a source officers deployed tear gas, which caused students to flee in search of safety.
Photos from the scene captured students running as law enforcement advanced, with vehicles rerouting amid the chaos. Eventually, officers started removing the barriers to restore traffic flow on the highway.
The students took to the streets to advocate for a resolution to the ongoing lecturers’ strike, which has severely disrupted teaching and academic activities at public universities.
This prolonged impasse has left students anxious about losing valuable class time and uncertain about when normal educational activities will resume.
The strike stems from disagreements between university staff unions and the government regarding employment conditions and the enforcement of the 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement.Union leaders are pressing for a clear commitment to fund the agreement, yet negotiations have not yet yielded an acceptable resolution for both parties.
This latest demonstration adds pressure on authorities and university representatives to resolve the conflict and allow students to return to their studies.
It also underscores the impact of the ongoing strike on academic schedules and traffic in Nairobi.
