Bad News for President Ruto as a Mole Is Exposed in His Camp Ahead of the 2027 Elections
Political friction has escalated in Bungoma County after Kimilili legislator Didmus Barasa declared that he had pulled his backing from National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, stirring fears of divisions within President William Ruto’s camp ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a statement issued on Monday, October 26, Barasa announced that he could no longer endorse Wetang’ula’s style of politics in Bungoma. He contended that the county required a fresh leadership approach that would place development and residents’ needs first.
Even with the rift, Barasa stressed that his disagreements with Wetang’ula would not alter his allegiance to President Ruto. He restated his dedication to the president’s broad-based administration and promised to bolster the United Democratic Alliance’s footprint in the county.
The Kimilili lawmaker charged that Wetang’ula was pursuing contradictory political agendas. He claimed that although the Speaker openly backs Ruto, his brother, Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, is affiliated with politicians allied to the opposition.
Wanyonyi has been connected to Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi movement, which has been drawing political interest as leaders gear up for the 2027 elections.
Barasa’s claims have raised doubts about Wetang’ula’s political partnerships and whether his local interests in Bungoma diverge from his national obligations. Still, the allegations do not on their own prove that Wetang’ula is quietly supporting Sifuna’s camp.
The legislator also denounced what he termed family-based political succession, maintaining that leadership ought to rest on merit, fair competition and voters’ choices instead of personal ties.
He additionally voiced worries over how resources were shared under a memorandum of understanding, claiming that people linked to certain family members had received an unfair portion of the benefits. These allegations have not been independently confirmed.
Nonetheless, Barasa held firm in his loyalty to Ruto and pledged to widen the ruling party’s grassroots structures in Bungoma. He is also eyeing a potential run for governor of the county in 2027.
The dispute emerges as political players across Western Kenya consolidate their alliances and jostle for influence ahead of the next election.
Wetang’ula’s reply to the accusations could influence the course of the quarrel and decide whether the growing divisions affect political teamwork in the region.
As 2027 draws closer, the central question is whether the fallout will erode Ruto’s political sway in Western Kenya.
