All Eyes on Sifuna’s Next Move After Being Told Opposition Allies Are Playing Him

Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has urged Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna to reconsider his political direction and join the broad-based government, warning that some of his opposition allies may not have his best interests at heart.

Barasa’s remarks come as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 General Election, with Sifuna emerging as a key figure in the Linda Mwananchi movement and discussions about the opposition’s presidential candidate continuing.

The governor has previously warned Sifuna against trusting some opposition leaders, arguing that they could be using him for their own political interests. He has encouraged the senator to return to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and work with President William Ruto’s administration.

Barasa believes Sifuna should reconsider his political strategy instead of rushing into a contest that could affect his future ambitions.

The governor has also argued that Sifuna is still young and could position himself for a stronger presidential bid in 2032 if he builds the right political relationships.

The latest debate comes amid growing efforts by opposition leaders to agree on a common strategy for challenging Ruto in 2027.

On October 20, Sifuna met former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at his Wamunyoro residence, where discussions centred on possible cooperation between Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party and the Linda Mwananchi movement.

The engagement has added another dimension to the opposition’s ongoing negotiations, with several leaders seeking alliances that could strengthen their chances in the next election.

Meanwhile, Sifuna’s political ambitions have attracted attention in Western Kenya, where several veteran leaders have recently expressed support for his potential presidential bid.

Barasa’s position highlights the growing political divisions over whether Sifuna should work with the government or continue building an independent opposition movement.

With the 2027 election approaching, Sifuna’s next political steps will remain a subject of close public interest.

Will the Nairobi senator follow Barasa’s advice and join the broad-based government, or will he continue pursuing his ambitions through Linda Mwananchi?
