In a move that has stunned the continental football scene, Young Africans SC officially confirmed the departure of Manqoba Mngqithi on Saturday night.
Tanzanian giants have sent shockwaves through East African football by terminating their head coach’s contract. The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach departs Dar es Salaam after a remarkably brief three-month tenure.
The leadership at Yanga decided to terminate following a stalemate against TRA United, which left the club trailing in the title race. This result followed a painful Kariakoo Derby defeat to Steve Barkerβs Simba SC, a fixture that often dictates pressure surrounding the head coach’s role at the club.
“The management of Young Africans Sports Club would like to inform the public that it has reached a decision to terminate the contract of the first-team head coach, Manqoba Mngqithi,” the club announced in an official statement.
The statement continued: “Likewise, the management of Young Africans Sports Club has terminated the contract of the first-team Conditioning Coach, Chyna Mokaila. The management thanks these coaches for their contribution to our club and wishes them all the best in their future endeavours,” as the club looks toward a new era.
Overall, Mngqithi oversaw 13 games, winning 10, drawing two and losing one. His side scored 29 goals and conceded just seven during his reign.
Mngqithi won six league games, lost one and drew one. In addition, he qualified the club for the CAF Champions League group stages after an 8-1 aggregate win over CFFA.
The former Golden Arrows and Mamelodi Sundowns coach also lifted the Tanzanian Community Shield after beating Barkerβs Simba 1-0 in his first match in charge.
