Yanga Make Shock Move: South African Coach Simo Dladla Steps In After Manqoba Mngqithi’s Exit
South African Coach Gets Yanga Opportunity After Shock Decision
South African football has been rocked by another major coaching development in Tanzania, where Young Africans SC have parted ways with Manqoba Mngqithi after a brief spell in charge. The club has turned to fellow South African coach Simo Dladla to lead the team on an interim basis while management searches for a permanent replacement.
The development comes after Yanga confirmed the termination of Mngqithi’s contract on 24 October 2026, bringing his time at the Tanzanian giants to an abrupt end barely three and a half months after his appointment. Dladla, who served as Mngqithi’s assistant, is expected to take responsibility for the team during the transition.
For South African football followers, the situation has attracted attention because both coaches have connections to the local game, while Yanga remain one of East Africa’s most prominent clubs.
Mngqithi arrived at Yanga in July with an impressive reputation built during his years at Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows. Expectations were high that his experience would help the club maintain its domestic dominance and make a strong impact in the CAF Champions League.
His opening spell included winning the Tanzanian Community Shield and guiding Yanga into the CAF Champions League group stage after an emphatic 8-1 aggregate victory over Madagascar’s CFFA.
Despite those achievements, recent domestic results increased the pressure on the technical team. Yanga suffered a 2-1 defeat against arch-rivals Simba SC before being held to a goalless draw by TRA United.
The draw left Yanga five points behind Simba in the league standings, and the club subsequently announced Mngqithi’s departure. His fitness coach, Tshephang “Chyna” Mokaila, also left the club.
Dladla now faces the immediate challenge of maintaining stability while Yanga’s leadership considers its next appointment.
Taking over on an interim basis means he must prepare the team for upcoming fixtures while keeping the players focused amid uncertainty over the permanent coaching position.
Yanga are expected to continue competing on two fronts: the Tanzanian Premier League and the CAF Champions League. That leaves little time for an extended adjustment period.
Dladla’s familiarity with the squad could prove useful during the transition, although his long-term position remains dependent on the club’s next decision.
Reports indicate that he is expected to lead the side while the search for a permanent head coach continues. No permanent successor had been officially confirmed in the reports available on 26 October.
The coaching change raises questions about whether Yanga will appoint another South African tactician or look elsewhere for a permanent solution.
Mngqithi’s departure also highlights the pressure facing coaches at clubs where domestic trophies and continental progress are major expectations.
